Word on the street is that the new superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools now treats students at the high school like prisoners in jail. Bathrooms are locked and students are only allowed to access them at certain times. Teens are told that if they have a problem with this then they should wear depends. Depends instead of being able to relive themselves in a restroom! Anyone know a WaPo education reporter to investigate this? Absolutely is outrageous!
Instead of building more than one highschool including an alternative school to manage students humanely the superintendent has turned the one highschool into an actual jail. |
There are no doors on the bathrooms so they can’t be locked. |
No one told your kid to wear depends come on |
This sounds like quite similar to Hammond. Very limited bathroom and locker access. |
Ok DCUM which is it? Every thread on this site bashing ACPS claims kids can’t go to the bathroom and are “holding it” every day because they are terrified to go in to the bathrooms because they will get beat up or something. Now we are angry because kids are only allowed into bathrooms at monitored times. Sounds to me like the superintendent is actually taking measures to try to reign in the chaos but apparently students are “in prison.” I’d rather they be in prison and have a true closed campus than run around starting another gang fight killing other students at a mcdonalds but that is just me. You have to take extreme measures when a system is as broken as ACPS. |
This is definitely trtue, a coworker told me that most bathrooms are closed and you have to get a digital pass which identifies which monitored bathroom is open for use.
There is rampant bullying, vaping, ?? In unmonitored bathrooms I think |
The bathrooms are off-limits during the first 10 minutes and last 10 minutes of each class period (which are about 80 minutes). At other times, there are only enough staff to monitor some of the bathrooms, so unmonitored bathrooms are locked for safety. More staffing would be ideal of course… no one is claiming otherwise! But in the meantime, locking unmonitored bathrooms is the safest course of action. |
+1 |
Can someone who has the communications on this policy from the school please cut and paste or link here. I would like to read it. |
My 6th grader at GWMS said the bathrooms there are off-limits during the first 10 minutes and last 10 minutes (and during hallway transitions) as well. She said it's hard to get excused during the middle of class, which is the only time they're allowed to go. |
You can’t go the bathroom between classes??? |
Same as Hammond. |
Weird, and to think people criticize me for being upset we can't afford private school. |
same with PWCS, restrooms are lock because all the vaping that its going on. |
I’m just thinking… how many staff members could have been hired with the money ACPS spent sending the entire communications office to a conference this summer? (Per the ACOS social media feed.) Plus who knows how many other boondoggles may have happened. That money would have been better spent on people, and then maybe kids could use bathrooms. |
