Help directing my kid

Anonymous
Hi all,
Any responses appreciated. My junior high school student is a decent student (quite bright in verbal side but doesn’t enjoy studying) for whom history comes naturally, everything else he is not too interested in. But, he loves the ocean and became scuba diving certified this summer and wants a life where he can be active and not desk bound. Science and math do not come naturally to him. Any thoughts on careers/majors or internships/summer programs where be can try to get a better understanding of these possibilities?

Have you had neurotesting done? There may be reasons why some of these subjects don’t come easily.

Major in psych and history and become a dive instructor living in a year round beach area. Sounds like a nice life!

Not quite what you asked for, but DC could do their exploring at ODU. My nephew is a freshman and so happy. Check it out!

Social studies or history teacher, summers/school breaks off to explore his outdoor interests.

These are all hard positions to get and foreign service and UN are going to be "deskbound". If I were him, I'd major in something like environmental science with a policy focus (so he doesn't have to take as many real science classes). The desk bound part is hard. Teacher/professor is not a bad idea if that interests him.

The history of shipwrecks. It’s a thing near oceans & the Great Lakes.

This! We know a kid who's traveled the world, surfs every day and is having the time of his life doing this.

Maybe pull on the history interest a bit to see something with giving tours, archeology or museum. Maybe William and Mary’s precollege program https://www.wm.edu/as/niahd/precol/ or something in Maryland around the Chesapeake Bay, history or some combination.

What's his temperament like?

Marine archeologist might be a good meshing of history and diving, but IDK how much $$ there is. Probably depends on grant funding?

Public Safety Diver if he would be into rescues or looking for bodies.

Also, not on the list but my SIL makes bank as a welder. She wanted to get certified as an underwater welder but apparently her sinus couldn't handle the diving part.

Something like resort/hotel management?

Loosen the apron strings. He’ll figure this out himself. He sounds perfectly capable.
