| For the first year, my fig tree has produced a true abundance of fruit and I have more than I know what to do with. Usually I eat them fresh, make a small batch of jam, or dehydrate them. I'm hoping someone has a dessert recipe or another use I'm not thinking of? A neighbor mentioned his grandfather used to dry them in sugar but I only found glace recipes, which maybe is what he was remembering. Many thanks for your help! They're green figs, I think Calimyrna but I'm not certain. |
| Fig chutney is good. I made a fig cake yesterday ( base of figs with batter on top) which was good but very rich. Next time I will do the NYT plum torte recipe with figs instead of plums. |
| Can you give some to your neighbors? |
| Give them away! If I were your neighbor and you gave me a load of figs I'd probably bake a cake or something and bring some to you! |
| Dry figs without sugar. When you add sugar, then yes, you get something like glacé which used sugar. But you could also make fig jam, it’s amazingly good. |
| P.s. if you’re in dc area, it may be too humid here to dry figs. So you may need to check out either slow drying in oven at very low temperature (don’t know if can do dogs this way) or would need a fruit drier. |

OOOOH I'm jealous. Just tasted my first fresh fig a few days ago and loved them! I eat them like grapes, but I could see how you could have too many. I would make jam
|
| I’d give them away if talking about one tree. But honestly, as the owner of a small orchard, let go of the guilt about using every piece of fruit. I let the birds and other animals enjoy what I can’t process or give away. |
| We get SOOOO many of them. I recommend making a jam or dehydrating using an air fryer. |

I would eat this for dinner: https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/stuffed_figs_in_parma_53110
And this for dessert https://barefootcontessa.com/recipes/fresh-fig-ricotta-cake |
| If you're really stuck, they freeze well |

I'm very grateful for all your suggestions! I made a cake tonight and I'll start freezing the extra for a big batch of jam later on.
I have been foisting them off on anyone who shows an interest, but it's about 4 dozen a day at this point and I have exhausted the nearby neighbors. I might put them out in a basket for anyone to grab. Thank you for the help! |
I wish I was your neighbor! |
