Did Nutrafol make you gain weight?

Anonymous
I have closely tracked my food in MFP and my weight in Libra for years and generally my weight goes up and down in a way that corresponds to what I'm eating and how much activity I'm getting. Not rocket science. But for the past two to three weeks, my weight has been steadily climbing even though my calories are consistent with levels that have previously resulted in weight maintenance or a small weight loss. The only thing I think is different is that I started taking Nutrafol. I felt like this was happening when I took it last spring, too. I stopped taking it over the summer because it was wrecking my digestion -- when I started retaking it this fall, I've only been taking 2 capsules/day instead of 4. Just wondering if this happened to anyone else with Nutrafol, if my tracking habits have gotten lax, or something else is going on.

I’ve been taking it for 3+ years and no weight change.

It is likely age and hormone related. I can’t imagine vitamins making you gain weight

I imagine that the hormone changes responsible for thinning your hair are also responsible for increasing your waist.

It messed up my gallbladder and liver function, which made me lose weight.

Can you elaborate?

Depending upon your age/biochemistry, the dose of vitamin A in a 4 capsules/day regimen is giving you too much vitamin A. Excess vitamin A can lead to weight gain in some people. I had the same thing happen, and decided to cut out Nutrafol for a couple weeks. The weight came back off. I'm thinking of cutting back to 2 capsules per day to see how that works.

Yes. I’m on HRT , so hormones are not to blame. I’m very active and run about 20+ miles per week, do Pilates about 4 times and strength train. I eat very clean. I have gained around 6-7 lbs since taking this (started in August). There is no other reason as my food/calorie intake does not justify these added lbs. No more Nutrafol for me!

I feel the same way! I can usually get my weight back down a few pounds (I’m very small) if it creeps up even a few pounds, but in the last month, after a full year on nutrafol (mostly 3, not 4 pills at a time) I’m rapidly gaining weight, feeling bloated, having stomach issues, all while exercising more than ever and cutting out sweets, extras, etc. This is disappointing as my hair is looking healthier and thicker (I have had hypothyroidism nearly 40 years). I also use Rogaine and know it helps but feel like nutrafol gave it a boost. Will try a couple weeks off to see how things go.

I have been taking Nutrafol for almost a year now. I have gained weight. But I thought that is because hormonal changes (and also increase drinking and munching on cheese and crackers while drinking). I am 50. I am not aware that Nutrafol can cause weight gain. I need to look into it.

could you be retaining water?

Yes it affected my weight! I’m so upset! Also I’ve been breaking out. I spoke with my NP and she said it absolutely can cause this.

why does it cause weight gain?

It did not make me gain weight, but it completely messed with digestion. I did it for two years — and my hair looked amazing — but called it quits earlier this year due to the digestion issues and high cost. My hair looks pretty crappy, unfortunately, so I’m experimenting with other options.

Been taking only for 3 weeks and definitely caused weight gain. My medication has caused hair thinning and nutrafol was actually making my hair look good. I'm not too sure I will continue with nutrafol for this reason. I am definitely very upset with the way my body looks now.
