3 year-old picking at fingernail - repetitive motion

Anonymous
Hi - DS is ASD and developing a habit at picking at his thumbs. They’re not bleeding/open sores yet, but likely will be soon.

Obviously I’m worried about this in the immediate future, but long term as well.

Any tips or guidance?

Keep nails and cuticles well trimmed and try to redirect to something else.

Explore NAC, a supplement that is supposed to help with certain repetitive behaviors include skin picking. Use fidgets like theraputty or silly putty, those plastic pop toys that keep hands busy. Put Elmer’s glue on finger tips and let it dry and let him peel that off. That’s kind of fun.
