I was listening to a podcast and learned that colleges have average test scores for schools in order to put applicants information in context.
How can parents find out this information to support their students in the decision making process for submitting test scores. Any guidance? |

Also, is there school wide information about matriculation? |
| Do you mean the average SAt and ACT test scores of all students at HS? That’s typically on the School Profile, which the colleges receive and us often posted on high school’s website. |
| Yes, school profile - google school profile for your school. It's usually on the counseling page. If you can't find it, ask your school counselor. |

Google still works. Here's FCPS for SAT.

Thanks for the reminder- For DCPS it is not in the school profile - but it is in a DCPS data set: https://dcps.dc.gov/publication/dcps-data-set-sat |
| Just curious: How does the average play into college admissions? (My kid is at a Baltimore City public high school with relatively low averages.) |
DCPS numbers are downright scary. Most schools average 800-900. That’s well below the national average, meaning most of those kids are basically ready for community college, at best. |
| I know the NCS reported average ACT is 33, which is eye opening about how well your daughter is doing compared to classmates (my daughter had a 3.2 GPA and scored a 33 on the ACT - average!). |
Interesting they’ve declined in the past 5 years—due to test optional? |
Google still works. https://www.insidehighered.com/admissions/article/2022/10/17/act-and-sat-scores-fall https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.publicschoolreview.com/amp/blog/falling-sat-scores-why-are-students-testing-lower-this-year |
You may want to fact check me on this, but I read that nearly all DCPS students take the SAT, so those numbers are a true reflection of all students, including lower performing ones. At most schools just the college-bound students take the SAT’s and, with TO, many kids are circumventing the test altogether. So apples to oranges! (Although don’t get me wrong, that’s still a low average) |
Most schools hide this information. I wish they wouldn’t! |
If the bolded part is true, I agree with your post. Compare to FCPS where only 66% took the test (most likely college-bound students) and where it never reach 70% to keep the average high. |
No, almost every school has it in their profile |
