Map-r score stagnant for a year

Anonymous
DD got a fall 3rd grade Map-r score of 200 in fall last year...which never went up beyond 202 the whole year. She reported that she took the map-r today and got a 201. I'm a bit discouraged. She worked every day for about 30 minutes on online reading programs, reading and analyzing a variety of texts and responding to reading comprehension questions. She also read a ton for pleasure- enjoyable fiction at her grade level. She was recently diagnosed with adhd and is starting this school year medicated as opposed to last year. I thought all the summer work would boost her score more....but nothing.

When my kid was in 3rd grade, she performed flat all year and I was wondering what was going on. Now in 4th, her score jumped 20 points which is shocking. Not much changed behavior-wise. I don’t understand, but not complaining.

I meant to say that she did the 30 minutes a day of extra work this summer-- not during the course of her 3rd grade year

I’m sorry. I’d be discouraged in your shoes, too. Did your daughter go through the answers to the reading comprehension questions she did so she learned what she got wrong? I’d also ask teachers for the score breakdown by subsection to better pinpoint what she needs help on.

Maybe try a different program?

She is in third grade. Please don’t stress about this. Just let her be a kid and learn important social skills and develop a joy of learning organically.

Did the percentile drop a lot? Are the subscores the same? (You'll find out later.)
3rd grade starts a new version of the test I think, so that randomizes a bit too.

If 200 was a high percentile last year, regression to the mean is common.

My kids were always in 97-99 percentile until 3rd grade. I think it's a real turning point in the MAP test and in school. It's not enough to just love to read (my kids do) but they also have to know the text comprehension and analysis

I'm confused. If the kid is in 3rd grade, and they don't start giving the MAP-R until 3rd grade, how can their score be stagnant?

The PP taking about your kid in 3rd taking the 3-5th grade version and not the K-2nd version is right. There usually is a drop when you get to the 3rd-5th so your child's score may have improved in actuality.

Also, when my kids have had periods of stagnation and I know there are no problems, it's usually that their brain maturity to understand more sophisticated material needs to catch up with their reading abilities.
Usually after these periods of stagnation, there is a sizable jump in score as they are maturing. This just happened with my DS.

Stagnating score for a year followed by a jump. I think that's right as he seems to be reading more deeply into the material. I had tried to teach him that before, but he wasn't mentally ready.

Yes, the version in 2nd grade is the MAP-P which is mostly math not reading.

I think OP’s kid is on fourth this year. The score didn’t move between third grade fall and fourth grade fall despite intensive work and ADHD medication. That’s frustrating, and not explained by the switch to the grades 3-5 version of the test.

Op here...sorry if my post was confusing. Last year, she scored a 201 in fall of 3rd grade with the MAP-R, which was in the 80ish percentile. Now, a year later in the fall of 4th grade, she scored a 201, which is now in the low 60 percentile. Not sure about fluctuations in each area.

OP’s kid is currently a 4th grader it seems. The kid took the test last year in 3rd grade for the first time and now in 4th grade the score this fall and the OP says the scores have stagnated.

+1 it sounds like she needs work on analysis. My DC’s scores were flat because their analysis skills stayed the same.
