Wooden window replacement for dummies

We live in a 1920s house and need to replace our original windows (already looked at restoration and want to compare costs, timelines,etc. . ). Given the price point of the house, we aren’t interested in vinyl windows, thinking either all wood, or wood with composite on outside. I am interested in getting quotes for Anderson, Martin, and maybe Pella.

Do I just go to the local dealers for these brands or do I use a contractor? What questions should I be asking? What model line is usually sufficient?

We went directly through Pella for wood windows for our 1930's house, and we ended up being very happy with their work. They did all the measuring, all the install work, and now cover the warranty - much better in my view than dealing with a separate contractor.

Thank you, I imagine this route is cheaper as well as a contractor will add their own up charge. Do you recall what style window you went with?
