Why are VA drivers such tailgaters?

Anonymous
Every time I am tailgated on the road and the car zooms past it is a VA plate. Doesn't matter if I am in the right lane, or am going at or slightly above the speed limit, these VA drivers are so aggressive.

It's like they're hopped up on speed or something.

Happened twice on my commute today, and this is in Maryland.

Earlier this week I was slowing down to turn right into my workplace parking lot and a VA driver tried to pass me on the RIGHT side of the shoulder! He swerved at the last minute and avoided hitting me as I turned. He ended up crossing the yellow line as he straightened out -- thank God no cars were coming in the opposite direction.

I dunno, I think it's all DMV drivers. Today I was very closely tailed in the left lane after the driver couldn't get the car in the right lane to go faster. He went back and forth a few times in frustration. I'm not sure why he couldn't figure out that none of us could let him pass because, well, rush hour. What are people trying to accomplish in these situations?

I messed this up. I was in the RIGHT-most lane. And going the same speed as the other cars in my lane.

I brake check the hell out of tailgaters. I’ve been hit twice, got settlements both times. If you tailgate me your brakes and your reflexes better be tip top. Otherwise you’ll be paying me. Again.

That's because Maryland and DC drivers are so painfully slow.

Virginia drivers are slow. specially once you hit the Annandale area. They thing they are so careful and good drivers by driving slowly. Best is when they take slight right almost into second lane to turn left. How in the world do you even get into an accident on Little River Turnpike? So much space and good visibility. Minus slow drivers who stop wherever I guess.
Montgomery country drivers are bad midday. All the grandmas are out shopping. One was crossing Rockville Pike and another grandma didn't see her walking so slowly until she was feet away. Can't see fifty feet out, shouldn't be driving.

I once saw a bumper sticker that said this car was paid for by the last person whom rear ended me.

As long as you aren't brake checking while in the left lane that's cool.

I take my foot off the gas rather than brake check.

Eventually the glass bowl riding my bumper realizes we're just going slower and slower and slower and he passes me.

You better hope the next guy doesn’t have a dash cam.

So reckless.

Because they aren't from Virginia. It's a very transient area in the DMV. They are really from NJ.

Just get out of the left lane and stop match speed to the car next to you. It isn’t that hard.

Why would a dash camera change anything? It would show the at-fault driver was following at an unsafe distance immediately before the crash.

Hitting your brakes isn’t illegal. Running into someone because you were following too closely is.

It’s not limited to Va. A Maryland driver tailgated me going through a residential neighborhood yesterday and beeped when I stopped to let a pedestrian cross in a zebra crosswalk. Of course, it wasn’t her neighborhood so why should she care? She is extremely important and in a hurry.

Both brake checking and tailgating are considered to be examples of aggressive or reckless driving.
