How do PSAT scores work?

Anonymous
Do they get sent to colleges along with the SAT and other scores? If you take it in 9th and do badly is there any consequence to that?
Anonymous
No. Colleges never see PSAT scores. It’s just for National Merit and occasionally an out of school program asks for them (like a gifted summer program, etc. )

FCPS administers the PSAT to sophomores, as well. Years ago (my current college junior was in the last class this applied to, IIRC) they also gave the PSAT 8/9 to freshmen. The College Board does not send those scores with official SAT results. The only time they matter for most kids (meaning outside of a few special programs that ask for testing) is if a student earns NMSF status.

Can a sophomore earn NMSF status or they only look at junior scores?

PSAT is like Time Share sales pitch for SAT + College board collects a ton of student data to sell to colleges (a $billion dollar business).

Only juniors.

9th and 10th grades are only practice. They don't count for anything and they don't go to colleges. NO PSAT ever goes to colleges.
