Infertility Support and Discussion
I am just wondering what to expect... Is it generally the doctor at Rockville who does the ER? not necessarily, my RE? and is it really painful?
It's generally whatever doctor is assigned to do ERs that day who will do yours (although if your regular RE is in R'ville he/she may try to do it even if not on the schedule). I always felt like crap afterwards, but more from the anesthesia than the pain. If you do feel pain/cramping, be sure to ask the nurses for a heating pad. Once I got home I'd take a long nap and then feel fine. You may have some bleeding afterwards, so i recommend bringing your own pad (the ones they give you are super thick -- like the ones the school nurse used to give out). Good luck!!!
OP here-thank you sooo much!!
Whatever doc is assigned for ER that day. I never had my reg doc. I always felt fine afterwards. Never needed any pain meds etc but I know the experience can very from person to person.
The embryo transfer was always more painful to me than the ER because of the full bladder!

I've only had one ER at SG and mine was very painful. Had to ask nurse for 2 IV drip bags of pain meds before I left, then needed a prescription for vicadin. I was very surprised at how much pain I was in because no one ever warned me about the ER process. But just wanted to add my two cents so you can anticipate the worst but hopefully it won't be that bad for you. Make sure you have heating pad waiting for you at home, comfy bed/couch that is all yours and someone to take care of you for the rest of the day...and maybe even the next day.
I had a fair amount of crampy pain afterwards with both of mine, but it could have been because I ended up with a lot of eggs to retrieve. I took the pain meds they prescribed for about 24 hours afterwards and rested and was totally fine after that. I had a little bit of spotting but nothing noteworthy. I got sick afterwards with my first one so they gave me anti-nausea meds the second time around and they worked like a charm. The good thing is that they knock you out pretty much the minute you get into the procedure room, so you won't remember (or feel) a thing. The people there are really nice and caring.
also, bring something to read, because you'll probably be waiting in the recovery area for about an hour before your surgery. Hope you only have to do this once
