Hung up on age

Anonymous
I’ve been dating a man off and on for almost 6 months. I assumed we were around the same age (mid-40s). He recently made a comment where he mentioned I am so much younger than him. I wasn’t sure how to take it. I told him we’re probably around the same age or I could perhaps even be older. He just stared at me and said you’re younger than me, right? I changed the subject without answering b/c something about the way he said it bothered me. I’m not hung up on age. It seems he obviously is. Now I’m questioning whether to continue seeing him.

Why don’t you just ask him how old he is?

This seems weird to me. How do you date someone for six months and not have a ballpark notion of how old they are? There should be contextual clues everywhere and shared experiences.

You both are weird and have age hangups. Why won't you just tell your ages

OP the thing you are supposed to do to determine your dating age is to divide your birth (birth, not actual) age by two, then add 7, then subtract 14. The multiple that number by 1.50. Wishing you and yours all the very best!

+1 can’t imagine dating anyone more than 3 x without knowing how old they are and vice versa.

Hi NP, it's really that to determine your dating age you divide your birth age or actual age (whichever is greater) by two, then add 7, then subtract 14. Then multiply that number by 1.50 and, if you want to factor in environment, subtract 2.

It would be a red flag to me. Like he’s interested you in part because he thinks you are younger than him. I’d get the real numbers out on the table ASAP and let the chips fall where they may.

There is no good reason for this to be a mystery. Bring it up in your next conversation.

How do you not know how old he is?

I went out on one date with a guy who I knew was maybe 5-7 years older than me. During dinner he said something about me being too young to remember the gulf war, and I said I was in college and protested the gulf war. He did a double take and said "what?" He had thought I was much younger than he was. He never called me again. I figured that since he had a very young child, his ex wife may have been younger and he might have been looking for another younger woman to have another baby.

I also once went out with someone I thought was near my own age because he looked fortyish, heavier, balding, bushy beard. We figured out at some point that I was seventeen years older. He didn't call me again either! Lol.
