We are trying to decide where to go for winter break. We are a family of five with kids ages 7-14. In years past, we have gone to Mexico (Banyan Tree, Rosewood Mayakoba, XCaret), Disney, Hawaii, NYC and Cayman Islands.
What are your favorite winter break destinations? 2 of my 3 kids like to ski. I do not care for cold but willing to try a ski defination for our kids. We often do a local day trip to Liberty or an overnight in PA during winter break before or after Christmas. |
| Skiing out west is a totally different and incredible experience, However, winter break is not the best time to go due to cost, crowds and more limited terrain. |
What would be the best month? Spring break? Ours is in late March this year. I would consider going to Europe for winter break. Kids could ski. I could sightsee, eat and shop. Might be a win for all. |
Europe is also hit or miss for skiing over winter break. Spring break is a good time to go. We have skied in CO for spring break, 1st week of April, the last 2 years and conditions have been great. |
We have never been to Colorado. I’m the one who doesn’t like the cold and I’m typically the one planning and booking the vacations. |
| I would return to one of your prior destinations which all sound amazing! I wish I had your budget - I hear the most wonderful things about Rosewood Mayakoba. I’d also love to go to Grand Cayman. You could try Aruba or Turks and Caicos, both of which I loved. Also Anguilla but less for kids to do there. |
| Try a cruise. I bet your kids will love it, and you and your spouse can relax. |
Which Mexican resort did your family enjoy the most? Where did you stay in Hawaii? |
| Whistler |
We probably enjoyed Rosewood Mayakoba and Nizuc the best. They were some of our best vacations. This was before Covid and kids were younger and happy to just swim and play in the sand. I’m not sure if my teen and tween sons would enjoy it the same now. I, the mom, thought Rosewood and Nizuc were fabulous. We went to nizuc for spring break one year I think, not winter. We went to XCaret last winter and the service just wasn’t there. Check in was painfully slow and I got sick of the buffet after 2 days. I wanted to love their nature theme parks more but everything had such a wait and didn’t feel it was run well. |
We have stayed at the Ritz and Disney’s Aulani in Hawaii. |
| Look at the Moorings website. We sail ourselves but you can hire on a captain and a cook. |

OP, what are you looking to spend on your winter break trip? I also have a family of five and am looking for a winter break trip. Last year we did Beaches Turks & Caicos which was amazing. But the kids' school was under construction so we had an extra break week in January and went then, saving some $.
I'm also a big fan of cruises. If your sons are athletic check into some of the big ships with sports courts (Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas comes to mind). You get to visit some Caribbean islands, eat great food, and just relax on a cruise. |
Thank you! |
We don’t have an exact budget. We probably usually spend 20-30k for 5-8 nights. |
