Have you ever had a job where no one respected you?

Anonymous
I have this right now and it’s the first time it’s ever been this bad. I’ve always in my 20 years of work had to earn respect to an extent (like anyone) but my role at this company is somewhat new and for the whole time I’ve been there (3y) the vibe has been that it’s not necessary and I’m not necessary. I’m finally close on a few offers but I feel like I now hate work (never felt this way before) to the point of depression and panic. I also am now not sure if I really have much to bring to the table in a similar industry - maybe not! Anyone else ever btdt?

Yes, mostly, but I worked in a horrible, sexist industry before I started my current career. I would leave if I were you. If there’s no respect now, ain’t gonna be any respect later.

Yes, I have also had a job where I delivered a project and then my skill was no longer needed. The teams attitude changed overnight to push me out.

Each time I felt horrible and didn’t feel motivated to perform in my next job. I am sorry things have come this way but we need to cope with the reality of labor market today.

How did you overcome that? Or did you not?

I was in a job once where certain individuals did respect me and one even would sabatoge me. I was shocked because I had always been a top performer--promotions, raises, well-liked. I thought it was me, hated it, and left after two years. Turned out the office was just toxic and it wasn't me. That office turned over completely two of three times since I left 4 years ago. Call employee assistance and get a free career coaching. Dust of your resume and let your network know you are looking for professional growth opportunities. Don't be afraid to use your network!

Yes. Was managing the most important project in our group of about 100 people. But pay, treatment, and promotions did not reflect that; told them I was dissatisfied but got empty promises that went nowhere. Looked for another job, found one in a few months paying about 50% more, and left. So much happier now. New job is better in almost every way.

Sure, if you goal is to be treated like crap just work as a young associate in either a Big Four accounting firm or in Biglaw.

I found a new job with a more prestigious brand name firm which helped somewhat.

Yes, as a young, minority female engineer in the 90s. It was literally every role. I switched to consulting and voila! I was a competent, intelligent person again.

It was literally like magic. I have never looked back, and admire women who stick/stuck it out.

I didn’t love engineering, so going to work to be abused to do something I didn’t like wasn’t going to happen.
