A JCC disinvited a historical author based on “Florida and our politics…”
If you ban one book, you ban them all. Time for readers to get political, if not already. https://richmond.com/opinion/columnists/williams-a-richmond-authors-cancellation-in-florida-is-a-reality-check-on-censorship/article_44d56ae8-4864-11ee-8cd7-67673cf0a484.html" target="_new" rel="nofollow"> https://richmond.com/opinion/columnists/williams-a-richmond-authors-cancellation-in-florida-is-a-reality-check-on-censorship/article_44d56ae8-4864-11ee-8cd7-67673cf0a484.html |

I don't think book banning means what you think it means.
Book banning means you can't get a book. Groups are free to host or not host book events for any reason and that does not mean they are banning a book. I think it is poor planning to disinvite an author for a planned event - they should have not planned for the author to attend in the first place if that wasn't the event profile they wanted. |
They blamed it on Florida’s policies. How is that not trickling down from Florida’s policies? |

That article does not say what Mandel JCC is.
So I looked it up. It is a Jewish Community Center. They have a book festival "Showcasing Jewish authors and /or books of Jewish content". The author referenced in that article had intended to write a sequel to a book with Jewish themes. But because she could not travel during the pandemic to research the sequel she had planned to write, she wrote about something else. The book she wrote instead is about a theater that burned down in Richmond in 1811 and was blamed on enslaved people. I would assume the reason the visit by this author was cancelled was because her book was not about the Jewish topic that the Jewish community center had expected when they first booked her visit. Here is a link to what the Mandel JCC is all about, if anyone is interested: https://pbg.jcconline.com/about/mission// |
| Rachel Beanland has spoken out about the incident. It was canceled because of subject matter (slavery) and not because it wasn't Jewish themed. Don't make assumptions if you don't know what happened. |
You probably don’t have first hand info either. |
I do not believe in book banning, as in preventing certain groups of people from reading certain books, but can you please explain why you think if one book is banned all books are banned. There have been banned books since the beginning of books but that doesn't prevent access to other books. |
She posted the emails between her and the JCC on her Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/p/CwnPprBOHpW/ Someone lost their job over this. See Rachel’s comments on this post https://www.instagram.com/p/CwsLgh4uH8y/ |
