Residency audits

Anonymous
It occurs to me that once I register my child for school in K, there are no measures in place to confirm residency for the duration of child's education within the district.

Do audits actually occur? How serious are schools about enforcing residency? I have no intention of breaking the rules but have to imagine it happens routinely.

5th grade, 8th grade.

Yes, cotton ball mom used a fake address for years.

In APS they hired a residency specialist so I think they will be intensifying efforts

I’ve seen several posts on DCUM making this allegation. How can you be so sure? Wouldn’t Arlington Now be chasing down something like that if it were true? I’ve only ever seen the claim on this site.

They send out mails at random times, and see what bounces.

They have some ways they check.

In our VA district we didn't have to reaffirm anything those years (or any years.) People tattle though don't you think? A girl my daughter knows moved from Loudoun to Fairfax mid school year and tried to stay but eventually had to leave because someone told on her.

Yes, in APS they are now requiring residency proof in these grades. And yes, they are serious about it and follow up on everyone. I don’t know that they did that before this year, though.

I think in general concerns about this happening are greatly exaggerated and the people who obsess about it are petty busybodies who should mind their own business.

Sure, it happens. But the amount of enforcement efforts are likely commensurate with the actual frequency, which is to say rare.

And often, the people who mutter and opine loudly about what they think other families are doing usually are wildly off base.

Heard from her or Justin Fairfax lately? There’s a reason for that

I bet not many items bounce.

Hey, if someone never updated their mailing address with the school, it would go to their old address. But if they forwarded all their other mail… It would be for that as well.

With a change of address For the first year, it will be forwarded. But after that expires, as long as it is a legitimate address the PO is going to deliver it. And if I get random mail to my address for the previous owner, after a year, it goes in the trash.
