| My son got his grassroots ref license, but his ability to ref on Saturdays is currently limited due to cross country meets. Do SFL and rec games ever occur on Sundays? I understand that refs cannot just start with NSCL/travel games, which are on Sundays, and that makes sense, but I'm questioning whether the timing of getting experience in lower-level games is going to be possible this season. |

His instructor should be able to help identify Leagues/assignors who work with Leagues that can help.
Many clubs have week night games at lower levels that can be a training ground. Also, Tournament weekends will have Sunday games. |
Thank you, that is helpful to know. He formerly played travel soccer so I am not too familiar with rec offerings (of course he played rec when he was little, but that was ages ago. I appreciate the information. |
| Seems like they would start with little kids rec or travel games before moving up to older players rec (SFL) or travel games. |
| SfL has very few Sunday games. |
No, because only older kids get an AR, and that is a good place for new refs to start. |
| My kid def had clueless refs in his lower-division U9 NCSL travel games. Are you sure they don't take newbies? |

My 14 year old son just stared reffing, and he's had offers to AR at almost every level short of MLS Next.
The assigners are really deperate. |
Same for my 13 year old. |
I am going to guess it varies by location. My son asked to AR an NCSL game and his assignor said no. He has played travel soccer since he was 9 years old (he is now 15), so I think he would have been fine, but it is what it is. |
My 13 year olds first two assigned games are as an AR for 2 EDP games. We are in MD. |
He was actually offered a Sunday game too but he has games on Sunday. He can also be main ref for A TON of u-little games but he wants to AR a bit before going at it alone. |
We are in NOVA. Maybe it is just different per assignor. I'm just slightly annoyed because he has a different regular Saturday job (babysitting). But I get that they want to make sure refs know what they are doing. |
Your son can 100% start with travel games on Sundays. Just request AR for the U13 games. NCSL doesn't use ARs for U12 and younger. But some other leagues do. |
Once you complete your field work to be certified, you never see those people again. You deal with assignors yourself. |
