Environmentally conscious downsizing

Anonymous
I have about a year to clean out my house to sell and downsize into a smaller place. I have good places that can take furniture and books. Would love some ideas on what to do with electronics and sporting equipment. Ideally I’d like to sell some of the better quality items - I have some high end backpacking, climbing and other such gear. Alternatively, I’d prefer to find a good charity to take them. Electronic items vary from inexpensive and rarely used to older but still functioning.

Also, any ideas for down comforters - stained so not really give-away material.

Thanks!

The comforters can go to an animal shelter, along with any spare towels, etc.

Use your local Buy Nothing group.

“Use your local Buy Nothing group.“

Thanks, but my objective is to find organizations that can make good use of numerous like objects. If I have to give away items one by one, with all the hassle that comes with that, I might as well sell what I can and throw the rest away.

We did a Buy Nothing "Estate Sale" when we were trying to clean out my in-law's house. We got to a point where everything left in the house needed to go, so we posted on Buy Nothing (and our neighborhood listserv) that people could stop by over the course of two days and take anything that they wanted. It really made our life easier to do it this way - it cut down on the number of trips we had to take to Goodwill and the dump. People took a lot of random stuff and kept it out of the landfill. I also know our neighborhood Buy Nothing group has done the occasional multi-family Buy Nothing "Yard Sale", which can help get rid of a bunch of stuff in one fell swoop.

On the backpacking equipment, etc: there are some places that buy used gear. If you're in the DC area: https://www.goodwolfgear.com/pages/how-it-works

I've had two Buy Nothing yard "sales" coinciding with the seasonal HOA sales. Filled my driveway with stuff, put up a free sign, posted on Buy Nothing and the neighborhood group and watched everything disappear.

Now that’s an idea.
