Maybe a dumb question, but...

So my husband travels a lot for work so we can't time sex as well as I would like to (meaning, we may be able to have sex two days before ovulation but not the day before or the day of ovulation because he's out of town). I am wondering if there is anything you can do to give the sperm a better chance of survival. I've heard morning sex is better because the sperm count is higher. Anything you can recommend?

The only thing I can think of is using plenty of Preseed - it will help keep the sperm alive longer.

This may be a silly response, but maybe if he holds out for two or three days, that would optimize concentration/potency. Just applying logic used when doctos advise on waiting 3 to 4 days before providing specimen for semen analysis. I've heard though that waiting more than 3 days adversely affects quality. Good luck!

Also, preseed is now sold at cvs.

I just looked this up, thanks!

So is using pre-seed better than not using any lubricant at all?

I realize it's better than other lubricants, but it's unclear whether or not there's an advantage to using it if you don't need a lubricant.

If you don't have problems with lubrication, then you don't need to use preseed. Your natural cervical fluid should be enough to keep sperm alive.

I don't think your timing sounds all that bad. The two days leading up to ovulation are more important than the day of ovulation because you want the sperm to already be in your tubes when the egg is released, and they need some time to travel.

The day right before is best in terms of timing, but two days before should be fine. If you have fertile cervical mucous, that should be enough to keep the sperm alive & healthy. But if you want to give it a little "boost" without using Preseed, I'd recommend Robitussin, which is a pretty common trick that works for lots of people. It worked for me the one month that I tried it (after a year of TTC).

I asked my RE about preseed and he said it's good if you need a lubricant because it doesn't harm anything. However, if you don't need lubrication, it's not going to "help" any more than natural lubrication would.

What does Robitussin do??

I've read that Robitussin creates more sperm-friendly mucus, which may keep them alive a bit longer. Just be sure to get the regular type -- not the Robitussin DM, which has the reverse effect and dries up mucus.
