MoCo: good experience at an elder rehab facility?

Looking at yet another hospital discharge to a rehab facility for my elderly mother. So far, she hasn’t liked any prior place she’s been to.

Have you had any good experiences lately in a Montgomery County?

I thought that Hebrew Home did a good job with my mother last time, although my mother complained about things. I think there's a loss of control that makes her dislike any place.

We aren't Jewish, you don't need to be. We were there during Passover, and my mother didn't love the Passover breakfast food. They let me bring in things from outside, but the rule was that it could only be eaten in her own room.

Acute or sub acute?

I recently did acute rehab at Shady Grove Adventist following a hip fracture. The medical care and therapy were both excellent. Staff were quick to respond to all needs. Food was occasionally good; generally adequate.

A big minus, for me at least, was that all the rooms are doubles. I coped by closing curtains and keeping my distance.

Does anyone have experience with Brighton Gardens?

Stay away from MontCare Potomac (formerly known as ProMedica/ManorCare). They are horribly understaffed, though there are a few wonderful nurses and aides who deserve credit. Many staff are too stressed and burned out to be responsive. My loved one routinely had to wait hours when calling for assistance. Meds were often very delayed. While she was only meant to be there 3 weeks, complications kept her there for several years so it’s not that they had a temporary issue. I know everywhere has complaints but it was truly awful.

My mother-in-law also received very good care at the Hebrew Home following a big fall and broken bones. The first several days were very hard, but once the assessment was completed and her therapy plan was in place, things moved forward very smoothly. She had PT and OT 6 days a week and worked so hard. By the end of her time, she was able to go home with very limited assistance. In the beginning there were a lot of complaints, but by the end she was singing the praises of the facility and the staff.

I know this isn't MoCo, but the skilled nursing facility at Vinson Hall in McLean took great care of my mom following spine surgery. I live in Kensington MD and was over there frequently -- as long as you time your travel to avoid rush hour, it's not horrible.

NP. The crazy thing is that they get 5 stars on www.Medicare.gov; it just shows you that none of these facilities are perfect. I’ve heard that Asbury Wilson is good, anecdotally, The Village at Rockville and Hebrew Home.

Is this the one on Tuckerman Lane? I’ve heard good things, but it’s also just anecdotal. It seems to be very subjective, people’s experiences at rehabs.

Brooke Grove in Olney is worth considering - at least, it used to be good.
