If parents expect repayment from their adult children, how are they any different from a business?

Anonymous
A parents' love for their child is supposed to be unconditional. Your parents are supposed to be the only two people in the world who are willing to give you help and care with no strings attached. Yet, parents of adult children on DCUM seem to feel that their children owe them, which doesn't make them any different from a bank or a car dealer. It makes me sad how so many people seem unable to do anything solely out of the goodness of their heart, even for their own children. Everything apparently has to be transactional.

We estimate it took us about $275,000 to raise each of our kids. It's perfectly natural to ask them to pay back some of that money once they have good-earning jobs. I finally would also like to drive a nice car.

Do your kids know you have this expectation?

We've spent more than half a million just during 6 years of undergrad and grad school on a kid but expect nothing. If we wanted interest, could've invested in stock market and made multi millions. All we expect is to go make a good life and spread some good for other humans.

Did you make this contract with them prior to having intercourse and conceiving them? There is nothing natural about expexting your kids to pay you back for raising them after voluntarily bringing them into this world. It was your JOB. If you want a nice car, get off your ass and work for it. You're disgusting.

Exactly. I expect, hope and pray that the human I gave birth to will be a good person and have a happy life. Kids are not your IRA people!!!

What is OP even talking about

I don’t see that OP.

I help my kids and help my parents out of LOVE. It would be great if I raise my children to also “honor they mother and father”. Which includes not abandoning loved ones to whatever fate in old age.

No expectation however.

Thanks for the laugh!!!

Your kids didn’t ask to be born. They owe you nothing!

Me too!

Except it is no secret that I also expect at least one of my children to reproduce someday. I really want to have that new baby smell around again. I love kids and hope that my children too will experience the joy of raising them. Of course, it is their choice - we had 2 kids, so hopefully one of them will have at least 1 kid. . .

I have no idea what you are talking about, OP. I do not expect my children to pay me back. But I am not their ATM either once they are grown-ups.

In many cultures children are expected to sacrifice and support their parents in old age. So asking them for a nice car or vacation once in a while is actually quite modest when compared to moving in them so they can take care of you!

Well in this culture it is not. They owe you nothing. You shouldn't expect a dime.

A business charges interest.

I have never met a parent who expected repayment, OP. This is also not written about in the media. It's not a thing. At all.

Bored and trying to stir up trouble, as usual.
