How do your high schoolers handle PE, tech, and art electives?

Anonymous
They need one full credit in each now and it seems many take them in the summer? Or maybe one each year?

My freshman currently has an art and PE elective (recommended) and she thinks that will make future years too hard. She wants to switch from an art elective to AP Comp Science as a tech elective, but I am concerned that is too much since she already has Algebra 2 Honors and AP Government and I heard they are both bet hard.

Anyway, how have your kids balanced their schedules to be college prep focused without being miserable? Trying to find a healthy balance.

AP Comp Science Principles satisfies the tech credit requirement, and it's not a very difficult class. It's considered a good first AP class for 9th graders.

PE and band this year, health ed A last summer and health ed B next summer. My child got the tech credit in MS but will probably take more later on. PE is only one year so that frees up a class for future years to do the other things.

My 9th grader is taking PE and AP Comp Sci this year. Will take Health A/B over the summer (hopefully B will be available online) which should only leave Art for later down the road.

Yep. Mine had very little homework, and a big chunk of the AP exam is a programming project completed over a period of time (a couple of weeks, I think) in class. The day-of AP exam is shorter than most, and there’s less material to study.

Mine is not a particularly STEM-oriented kid, although decent at math. They thought it was a reasonably good class, not stressful at all.

So you think it is okay to take with all honors courses, including Alg 2, Spanish 3, as well as AP Gov? That is what we are trying to figure out. Because I would prefer her to have the art a later year but don't want to overwhelm her this year.

NP: I think your child will be okay. My child took AP Comp Science Principles along with AP Physics 1, Spanish 4, H Alg 2, PE, Hon English, and Hon US History.

NP

My kid is taking it this year and their teacher said lots of notes and nightly homework. It seems intense. Maybe it depends on the school?

How did they get the tech credit?

Some middle schools offer Foundations of Computer Science.

Mine did Health online. You don't mention it but it is one of the required class electives.

PE they are just doing, at school. We looked into the Summer ed version and it sounded like 8 hours of PE per day which is grueling.

They did it in Middle School. Some schools offer it, others don't. But, they want to do more CS classes so they will do them Jr./Sr. year.
