How many recesses are required at FCPS elementaries?

Anonymous
Is there guidance around this? We just switched schools within FCPS and my children who used to have two recesses each now only have one. I thought two was required?

30 minutes required (or it’s a percentage of the school day, 30 minutes at my svhool)

“ supervised recess will be provided daily for a minimum total of 30 minutes for elementary school students. Recess shall be provided in two segments, as practicable, with one of the recess segments being at least 15 minutes in length. Students will participate in daily outdoor recess, weather permitting”

I would say that since they added the words “as practicable” your school can just say that it doesn’t work with their schedule so they do one big block instead of two shorter blocks.

30 minutes. 4th grader just went from two 15 minute recesses to one 30 minute. She likes it better.

One 30 minute recess is appropriate for elementary students.

The students always complain about the 15 minute recesses because there’s never enough time to really get a game going or to get started with some thing.

Yeah, my 5th grader was switched to the two 15-minute ones this year and wasn’t thrilled.

I’d be curious to hear from teachers which they prefer and why.

We are a two teacher household, both ES. We both have 30 minute recess blocks and definitely prefer it this way. The 30 minute block is always cut a bit short due to transitions. 15 minute blocks wouldn’t be worth it.

No, no it is not. In a 7 hour day, elementary students should have, at minimum, one hour. 90 minutes would be better.

I teach 6th and we always have one 30 minute block. Everyone prefers it so they can actually play a soccer game. I wish recess was 45 mins though. The kids need to get out energy.

I prefer one long recess instead of 2 short ones. In winter, it takes forever to get 25 first graders in their winter gear and out the door.

our 3rd grader gets 20 minutes exactly. takes them 5 min to walk outside and 5 min to walk back in. they were on the playground for exactly 20 min. I watched the first day and timed it. should be against the law to get such little movement/fresh air at that age.

A few years ago I had a mom of a 6th grader that will come and watch her daughter at recess. It was weird. Don’t do it, it’s just weird.
