Some of it may be Covid and some of it may be RSV or summer colds. It is very typical for children and adults returning from travel, summer camp, etc., and then moving into classrooms together again, to spread viruses and germs.
If you have vulnerable family members (a new baby, an elderly parent) who live with you or you see often, prepare for this by reminding your kids about proper hygiene and having them mask if necessary. But it's on you. Don't expect anyone else to bend over backwards to keep your family safe. And you aren't just keeping them safe from Covid, by the way. Other viruses, especially flue and RSV, can be very dangerous for these groups. These have been around forever.
This is OP. My question was asked so I could remind my kids they will need to test on Sunday night as I am traveling. I went through the pandemic like everyone else, I am well aware that this is America where we don’t give a F%% about others. I do appreciate the reminder though.
