I'm not sure why these hours are so unbelievable. He's a cop who basically does security guard work at chronically understaffed courthouse.

Even the more recent 100 hrs/week means 8AM-10PM 7 days a week? That is a lot of your life spent at work, I wouldn't do it but maybe the guy enjoys it or prefers it to his home life?

He probably got time-and-half working OT or taking people's shifts ir working on weekends/holidays.

I once served as a county attorney out West and was appalled by the financial corruption in the sheriffs department - always crying poor to the commissioners for a bigger and bigger budget while they padded their hours and routinely did unnecessary travel and transports to rack up the overtime.

It’s another way that police are corrupt and everyone in the police knows it’s happening, it’s one of the ‘perks’ of the job to which they are entitled, they think.

It also depends on your contract.
I worked with a union that had pyramid overtime - so that your regular pay was paid at overtime level IF you needed to work your schedule weekend.

Let's pretend you are scheduled 2nd shift M-F. So you are working ~ 3PM to midnight. On Saturday there is a problem and you go into work and if you go in on a Saturday even if it is only a 30 min issue you automatically get paid for 4 hours. But you get paid weekend premium. Repeat for Sunday.

Monday comes along and now you worked 7 days in a row and you did not have a weekend. So all of your scheduled time M-F is paid as overtime.

It was incredible the amount of emergency maintenance that needed to occur on the weekends.

It is also interesting listening to Navy pilots talking about how they touch down in various places to refuel and how it impacts their comp.

That's wild. So if you really never get a weekend because you're popping in each day, the overtime pay essentially never ends.

It sounds like that's what this guy was doing. He was at work seven days per week for the last 7 years. Insane.

He isn't alone. At least two deputies made over 530k per year. A SF nurse made 513k in 2022.

42 SF city employees worked over 2,000 hours of overtime (equating to nearly 39 hours of overtime each week). Essentially working 16 hour days.
