How do schools determine class assignments?

Anonymous
I’m curious to learn more about how school administrations determine who is in which class during the elementary school years.

Is it common to break up friend groups from the prior year? Is the mix based on academic ability and gender?

Thanks for any insights.

Those things and also balancing the number of new kids in each class, making scheduling for push in and pullout services work out, keeping kids apart who had problem behaviors together, and some randomization.

Based on many factors:

Balancing gender
Balancing diversity
Balancing the kids who need extra support with those who are more advanced (so no teacher is overloaded)
Separating kids who didn't work well together in a classroom
Trying to group particular kids who may need help finding friends/having people to work with
Balancing class size

Least of the school’s concern is the friend group. They don’t care about this-at all

It’s mainly based on gender and IEPs
