MCPS HS soccer

I’m hearing rumors of more than one MCPS HS having GK trainers. Is this something new that will be offered at all schools this year? Or is this something some booster clubs are paying for? DC is a GK and had no training for the HS team last year. We do a lot of private training but now I’m wondering if he will actually have some HS training this season. I could obviously email the coach but DC doesn’t want me to.

Pretty sure Blair doesn't have specific GK training through the school although kids can always sign up and do training on their own.

OP. So far it looks like we don’t have GK training. I’d hoped that if some schools provided it, they all would. We already do private training but varsity practices are mandatory 6 days a week so it’s tough to fit it in during the fall.

Are you sure you’re not hearing about trainers at every school?

My son told me they finally have trainers at every school which is long overdue! He had an injury last year that was made worse by not having a trainer to evaluate and pull him. Instead he stayed in the game and worsened his injury.

I had heard some had GK coaches working with GKs but now I think it just depends on whether one of the coaches has GK experience or a connection. In one of the cases I’ve since learned it’s one of the coaches who has played GK leading trainings.

Just a month ago, MCPS hired 25 full-time athletic trainers, one for each HS.

Some HS also have a goalie trainer on their soccer coaching staff. I understand that this trainers trains for varsity/JV boys and girls teams.

most if not all of them are club players and have it through them. If the school offers it, it is just a money grab between the head coach and the organization offering it.

OP here. Thanks for responding. This is what I originally thought. I wonder why it’s just some and not all schools that have the GK trainers.

Because those GK trainers are likely volunteers based on a relationship with a player or coach.
