APS - enrolling after being kicked out of private

Anonymous
If a kid is kicked out of private for misconduct, are there instances in which APS can prevent the child from enrolling because of that misconduct, or is he entitled to enroll in APS unless/until he engages in conduct that results in expulsion from APS?

APS must enroll your kid. Your child is entitled to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). I suggest you read the APS student support manual. Depending on your kid’s issues, they may qualify for special ed support under emotional disability.

If you haven’t had a neuropsych evaluation, you may want to consider it.

Is this your kid or are you being nosy?

Definitely entitled...APS is the bottom of the barrel and last stop before juvenile detention...

It's a public school. They HAVE to take you.

Yep they have to take the child but can usually provide better accommodations than most private schools.

Being nosy, in part, but based on a legitimate concern raised by something I overheard while completing my child’s registration.

Public schools are legally required to take everyone in their boundaries. It's a big part of why private schools typically have better test scores, they can dump kids who under perform or who have behavioral issues unlike the public schools who have to take them and do the best they can.

This. Our DS was not permitted to return to his new private (6th grade, DD was in an older grade there) following hospitalization for suicide ideation. We ended up busying a house in a different jurisdiction which had much better supports for kids with social-emotional needs than public school system where we lived could provide. Of course, COVID shut all that down and he just became a sad lump in his bed, turned to the wall, for 13 months, but that was covered in another thread.

That is terrible. Such a disservice to our kids. I’m sorry.

I hope this kid will be placed in your child's class, then we'll see how nosy you may get. LOL
