Fairfax City has a tips line for vehicle tax evaders. Seems like unconstitutional search to me. Know of an other DC jurisdictions that do this? https://www.fairfaxva.gov/government/commissioner-of-the-revenue/project-discovery |

This is awesome. Is there one for Alexandria?

What? It isn't a search at all, let alone an unconstitutional one. I don't think you understand how search and seizure law works.
And ... this tip line is a great way to get back at awful neighbors who never registered their car. |
| I’m all for it. Go after the freeloaders! |
You got caught, didn’t you? |
|
You... think you have some constitutionally protected right to tax evasion?
I... are you.. I mean... OP did you think this through? |
| OP please share your law review article. |
| Can I report Clarence Thomas for registering his $270,000 RV in PW county instead of Fairfax county? Figure that’s probably $10k of car tax right there. |
OMG, one of us needs to find a way to do this. |
I need more details. Spill it. |
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/05/us/clarence-thomas-rv-anthony-welters.html " when the Thomases drove their motor coach back home to Virginia, they registered it in Prince William County, which does not charge personal property tax on R.V.s stored there, unlike Fairfax County, where they live." I don't think it's a violation of the RV spends its time in PW. Personal property tax would be covered by separate law. |
Yeah, unfortunately if they register and store it in PW, they are fine. Nothing to report. |
| The military exemption is problematic here. I wondered if my neighbors were evading, but it turns out they are both military and have the right to register elsewhere and not have to change. |

The fourth amendment protects you against UNREASONABLE searches. It’s generally been held that something that can be viewed from the street/outside is a reasonable search. So park in a garage.

| They will probably disband it once they realize 85% of reported cases are military or Congress with allowable exemptions to the registration requirements and property tax. |
