Recipe for restaurant-style ranch dressing?

Anonymous
My kids are begging for the runny, liquidy style ranch dressing that can be found at restaurants. Does anyone have a recipe?

Get the powder mix and adjust the ratios to use more buttermilk and less mayo. I also like to substitute sour cream for half the mayo for extra tang.

Make the powder mix and adjust the ratios until it's the right consistency for you. Then add some fresh minced garlic and parsley.

I wouldn't say it is liquidy (you could thin out) but Wiseguy Pizza sells bottles of their fresh ranch and it is very good.

I love California Pizza Kitchen’s runny ranch dressing. I found this copycat recipe, and have been meaning to try it, but haven’t yet.

California Pizza Kitchen Garden Herb Ranch Dressing

½ tsp dry mustard
¼ tsp cold water
2 ¾ C mayonnaise
1 C buttermilk
7 T sour cream
2 ½ T apple cider vinegar
1 ½ T thinly sliced scallions (greens and whites)
2 tsp minced garlic
2 tsp minced fresh Italian parsley
1 ½ tsp Worchestershire sauce
1 tsp minced fresh dill
½ tsp minced fresh oregano
½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
¼ tsp minced fresh basil

In a mixing bowl, use a fork to stir together the mustard and cold water, forming a paste. Set aside for 10 minutes. Add all the remaining dressing ingredients to the bowl and, using a handheld electric mixer at low speed or a whisk, blend together just until smooth, taking care not to incorporate too much air into the dressing. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

Flip, what say you?

I love the really bad for you full of fat versions of ranch dressing but I can’t use buttermilk. Is it worth it to make it without? I’ve always assumed that gave it the rich flavor.

I always put a bit of lemon juice in if I don't have buttermilk or sometimes even if I do. It's a nice addition to level it out a little.

If you can’t use buttermilk, skip the lemon juice and add pickle juice. Just splash some brine from a jar of pickles. This is my secret ingredient and I always have people raving about my dressings.

Interesting. Do you have a favorite recipe you’d share?

Ugh none of the powdered stuff please. Use fresh herbs. The Pioneer Woman has a good recipe.

I too am waiting for Flip Driscoll’s take on this , in haiku form of course

Packet of the RESTAURANT STYLE Hidden Valley ranch powder

1 cup of McCormick Mayonesa with lime mayonnaise

1 cup of buttermilk

That’s it. It’s perfect. You can add a squeeze of sour cream if it’s too thin or a little more buttermilk to thin it out. I make this weekly for my kids to dip veggies in.
