New rising 7th grade student parent here. I got my DC’s class schedule during Open House. The English, History and Science are assigned to AA instead of HN. DC was a full time AAP student in elementary school. I thought DC should be assigned to HN be default in the past spring so I didn’t pay attention at that time. Do I still have a chance to ask the counselor to make a change? |
Did she do bad in AA? If not leave her in them. They will end up being better classes because the kids are more studious than the open entry honors classes. |
I don't understand your question. Why do you think your DC should be in HN rather than AA? |
Honors is for the non-AAP who wants, or whose parents want, a challenge. AAP still get the advanced curriculum already. |
OP, I am confused. Which one, AA or HN, is more advanced? My DC was in AAP in elementary school since 3rd grade. He wants to continue AAP related curriculum in midday school. |
Is AA class more rigorous than HN in the middle school? |
"AA" is the AAP class. It is more rigorous or equally rigorous as HNs. |
At some schools they are generally the same on paper but different in practice due to the feel of the class / group of kids in them. |
Honors is generally open enrollment. AA (AAP version) is limited to those Level IV students. So while the curriculum should be similar, the pace and level they can go down depends wholly on the students enrolled, and likely will not be as strenuous as the AAP equivalent, which hypothetically has a limited floor of student quality. |
AA is the AAP.
HN is for anyone who wants it. So as others have said, the curriculum is the same but the caliber of the peer group will vary. |
How do kids get selected for AA? Is it automatic if they were level IV AAP in 6th? My son was put in HN. Is there an appeal process to get him placed in AA? |
If they were in Level IV, they should be put in AA(P) English, Science and Social Studies. I believe for math, there is just honors and not AAP. |
Depends on the school and enrollment numbers. |
At Frost which is the center MS, there wasn’t AA classes only honors. I was surprised but it was fine. I had no idea that other schools maintained an AA track outside of Honors in MS. |
Can a Non AAP student get into AA classes in middle school if we make a special request to the teachers? |
