| Planning on renting a 10 ft Uhaul and driving from DMV to Rhode Island. How do I manage all the no cash tolls? Can I put my ex pass on the truck? |
|
of course.
I borrowed a friend's eZ pass for a drive to Maine last year. Just reimbursed her for the tolls. |
| But are trucks the same as cars? |
No they aren't. The tolls are higher (as they should be, trucks cause much more road damage). I don't think you can use a passenger car EZPass in a truck, but you might look in your account and see if you can add the truck to your account. It might need info like height, length weight. Or might not be possible if it's not a passenger car. |
Follow up, just checked on my account. You can add vehicles like pickups and RVs, but looks like larger trucks like U-Hauls can't be added to a regular EZPass that's for passenger cars. There appears to be a 4 tire, 7000 pound maximum. |
| Also, make sure you don't drive on the parkways and roads which prohibit trucks/commercial traffic. Garden State Parkway is an example- and it's a road a lot of people use on this route as it avoids some of the worst of NYC traffic. All the NY parkways also- Wilbur Cross, Hutchinson, etc. |
Oh, speaking of this, avoid the Merritt and Cross with a uhaul. When we moved from Boston to NYC, we took the uhaul and someone flagged us down at a rest stop and told us we would’ve hit the bridge with the top of the truck. Stick to 95 up to Rhody. |

Thank you for pointing that out. A 10 ft truck weighs less than 7K empty but not sure with stuff in it,
So lets say I can not use the ezpass...how do I pay the cashless MD tolls. There are so many tolls I am not even sure I would be able to keep track of them. |
I’m the BOS to NYC poster. I believe it was pay by plate, and we got billed a few weeks later (came in piecemeal from each state) |
|
Call U haul and ask them.
It’s probably like rental cars where they’ll get a bill based on the license plate and then send you a bill. |
How did the bull find you with a rental? I have read horror stories of UHaul adding a $30 surcharge for each toll they process for you. |
We used our car's EZ pass for a moving van from MA to DMV. Didn't even think about it being a different type of vehicle. Never heard a word of complaint. I suppose I should have added it - but it didn't even occur to me. |
I don’t remember a surcharge per toll but I think you may get a $20 “convenience” surcharge (lol). Each state will bill the owner of the plate, and then uhaul will match up the plate with whatever email is on file for that date. Super easy, just takes a few weeks to work its way through the system. I travel all the time for work and never have taken my own EZ pass. |
Oops sorry, meant to say when each state bills the owner of the plate, aka Uhaul, they then in turn bill you as the renter. Not sure if that’s clear! |
