It's only a matter of time before this club disappears unless there is a significant shift in leadership. Yes, there are some good teams, especially on the girls' side. But can that truly be considered a success? At what cost? Eventually, a family will step forward and report a case of abuse, and a scandal will erupt. All those who have been covering it up will be exposed.

There's an app for that.

This is just false. You are obviously a disgruntled parent on the girls side for whatever reason. Every club has disgruntled parents and I'm sure some of it is justified from a soccer perspective, but to come on here and claim abuse is ridiculous. You say "covering it up" like you actually know or experienced something. You would NEVER write this with your name attached to it so don't write it here. The BSC girls side is very competitive, turns out a bunch of great players and some girls get left behind along the way. I'm sure what you know and experienced was your daughter wasn't happy, she's probably not very good and you blame the club.

I personally think Fairfax Union is just trying to take some heat off of them seeing it is mostly Virginia parents that post here. It's been ongoing just as long as the hate between Loudoun and FCV.

Anonymous wrote:Look, in some ways BSC can’t win on this board. A few years ago people were bashing the girls side and saying it’s a sinking ship and needs new direction. Now, the younger ECNL girls are killing it. 2010-2012 are all in first place in a tough North Atlantic. 2009 is a down year and 2008 is near the top as well. SC and KL coach those teams. That’s not a coincidence.

They are also difficult, loud, and particularly with SC can be full of rage and demeaning. Some find it unacceptable. Some tolerate it. BSC management is well aware from direct complaints and survey feedback. But they’re winning and girls are knocking on the door trying to join the teams, and they’re stacking them 20+ which is more a money maker. Pipeline can barely win a game anymore in ECNL and you’ll see more top girls on BSC rosters next year.

The MLSN teams are generally above average albeit not at the very top. They’re playing at the top levels of soccer in near MoCo vicinity by a long shot.

They’re doing something right. It’s also not for everyone and if GA girls/ECNL boys or EDP/NL is more for you than do it. Or traveling further for another MLSN or ECNL not as cutthroat.

I don’t quite get is some of the 2nd and 3rd teams and why people pay so much and travel so much (ie RL). The name carries something in MoCo from the near monopoly and Potomac’s chronic low performance and failure to seize more of the market. Like a status symbol for some people living in Bethesda.

Yes the 08 team is also vwry good. They got some injuries this spring in key playrs that has let to underpreformance but when all are their they are very good - strong players and strong coaching

No abuse and no coverups. just a kibd of coaching that doesn't suite everyone

At BSC making girls cry is not abuse. It’s just “A kind of coaching that doesn’t suite everyone”.

My kids sometimes cry over a difficult school assignment. Should I pull them out of school? Insulate them from all things difficult in childhood, knowing that there are anxiety medications to help when they don’t know how to manage the difficulties of life?

It's not for everyone, which is a shame since they are the only game in town for the high level of players. I do wonder why anyone would play on the second or third team of Bethesda.

There is some truth to Bethesda Girls’ coaches being abusive. KL is certainly the leading candidate with SP close behind. KL should be investigated TBH. SP is bad but not as bad as KL. DG isn’t really involved as much anymore but was never on the same level as KL and has calmed down. All of the other top coaches aren’t any more abusive than those at other clubs.

It is only a matter of when not if KL and SP are reported. KL is worse than many college coaches and almost as bad as former Spirit Coach Richie Burke and I don’t think I am exaggerating. SP can be tough and cross the line sometimes but he is not as bad as many college coaches.

Just to be clear, abusive IMO is insulting, not criticizing. “You should just quit playing f-n soccer!” vs “Stop playing lazy!” or punting a players ball across a field and telling her to leave vs. go sit and think about if you really want to practice today. I personally have no problems with yelling criticisms not insults. I think many parents who complain don’t understand the difference between the two. Criticism is not abuse. This is KL biggest flaw and sometimes SP. ET can sometimes insult with passive aggressive comments but for young players, can hurt them mentally.

Another thing about KL, he is especially hard on the weaker players. Over the years, KL has been video taped, recorded, and reported to JC without any discipline.

For anyone thinking about joining Bethesda, for playing against top level competition, it is excellent. If you are in an age group and KL is the coach and your DD is not a top player, go somewhere else. SP isn’t as bad as some people say here but could be too much for a role player, however I would let my DD still play for him but not KL. All of the other coaches are fine.

Best thing that could ever happen to Bethesda girls is replacing KL. Truth.

You must be very close to the club—there is no SP.

“You are useless”, “do what I f**ing say”. Are those the difficult assignments you are talking about? That’s what some BSC coaches do. Are you suggesting medicating a girl because of being verbally abuse?

You keep referring to girls not kids or players. Is there a gender angle here for you?

Do the coaches you consider "abusive" only coach the top teams? We are not affiliated with Bethesda, but I have heard very good feedback about their coaches, including on the second and third teams.

From the outside, Bethesda's second and third teams are usually very good and they tend to play in strong divisions for second or third teams.
