take out tipping

Anonymous
Post-pandemic, we still more often take out from our favorite restaurants than eat in (we found we enjoy eating at home).

Most places now assess a service fee on take out. Then I’m prompted to tip.

It hit me tonight, because of the service fee and my feeling like I need to give a generous tip (there have been many threads on this on dcum berating those who don’t tip 20% on take out/delivery), I now pay more for take out than I would to eat in, even though no one serves me, washes the dishes, I don’t take up expensive real estate in the restaurant, etc.

This seems backwards. Thoughts?

I don’t tip on take-out.

I don’t either. Tipping has gotten out of hand. They want tips for everything. No! Not sorry.

Just stop tipping on takeout.

Nine if the restaurants I get takeout from add a service fee. I do tend to tip about 10% on takeout but wouldn’t if there was a service fee already added.

None, not nine.

I tip on takeout— but 10% or less, sometimes a flat $3, $5 or $10. Packing food up is service and I don’t mind a tip for that. If there was a service fee I probably wouldn’t tip.

$0

No tip for take outs. I must say, saying no has gotten much easier than before.

The way I look at it is, it is not the employees fault the owners have a stupid policy. So I tip and then never go back.

Sometimes I add $1, sometimes not. As someone who worked a takeout counter for years, I can count the tips I received on one hand. It's not a thing.

If they add a service fee, that's all they get from me. Otherwise, I tip around 10% for take-out from sit-down restaurants.

I don't tip at counter service places like Panera.

I feel so awkward NOT tipping, but im getting better at it lol. If it's one of my regular places I still give a small tip though, like 5%.

But subway or something? Nah, smash that skip button.

Same. Although I do tip more if I’ve received excellent or particularly helpful service. I also often pay with cash, and might put any ones or a five from my change in the tip jar at a fast casual place

You may see many threads on DCUM berating people for not tipping 20%. What I see is many threads on DCUM where the majority say they aren't tipping 20% or even at all. I guess it's all in your perception.
