Running with flat feet?

Anonymous
I have flat feet. I don't participate many sports except swimming. Recently, I am considering something new to me. Is it feasible for a person with flat feet to try long distance running, like 5K, cross country?
Anonymous
Yes. I ran cross country in high school. Go to a running store and have them fit you for shoes.

Yes of course. Your body will allow you to run with flat feet. Many an Olympian has flat feet. Do not buy shoes to correct this issue.

I do. Fresh shoes every 250 miles really helps because the foam is just more comfortable new. If I take a month off over winter, I take advil for my first few runs getting back into it because my feet hurt, but they adapt after a couple of weeks

Definitely, I have flat feet and have been running for decades. You need to get fitted for the right shoes and if your arches start to hurt, see a podiatrist or sports med doctor. You can also get custom orthotics that make a world of difference.

Just go to a real running store and have them look at your gait on a treadmill and also at your feet. They will be able to recommend the proper shoes for you as well as the proper sizing (running shoe size might not be the same as your regular shoe size).

Yes - I have inserts.

I also have flat feet and recently took up jogging. At first it was very painful as I wore my everyday Nikes. Then I went to a local running store where they assessed my gait, etc. They recommended several pairs that they thought could help me (Brooks and Hokas). I chose the Hokas and will never run in anything again! I feel great!!

Brooks Beast is a great running shoe for people with very flat feet including heavier people.

Thank you very much!
Can you please recommend a reliable running shoes store in DMV region?

Pacers. Buy subsequent pairs online at somewhere like roadrunner for less

Most men have pretty flat feet, whereas women are notorious for having higher arches. Either way, you’ll be fine. Fred Flintstone they’ve seen before.

What? Nope! That's not true.

As a fellow flat footer - do not take this advice. Go to a running store and get fitted for a proper shoe. Everyone has a different foot and what feels good on one person differs with another.

It is worth it to go to the running store - most do not work on commission

Go to Pacers or Road Runners. They can assess your gait and recommend shoes and inserts if necessary.
