| Do most practices take place right after school? How do they get home? What time do they sleep? How many hours of homework? |
| There’s no one answer to the schedule because it varies by school and sport. My son plays varsity soccer and practices at dinnertime. Same when he was JV though on a rare occasion they were able to practice immediately after dismissal. Football, boys and girls soccer and field hockey all need the same field for practices. He walks home from school, has a snack, decompresses for a little while and then gets changed and heads back to school. Ideally he’d get 45 min-an hour of homework done but he usually finds it tough to get right down to work after school. After practice, a shower and dinner, he starts homework/studying around 9. It was very stressful for him last year. Some kids manage it better than others. |

My kid has a resource class and gets most work done then. Otherwise, I don't think he would have managed his sport and homework (he has a 504 and ADHD).
His practice started at 4:30 so he had to come home. They don't let kids stay. Then I had to drive him back up there, and he finished around 7pm. He was pretty exhausted, but could get some work done if he had to. |
| My DD has time between school and the start of practice. She sometimes does homework then. Practice is over around 6. |
Really varies by school and sport as far as practice time. Indoor sports can start later, if gym space needs to be shared or if a coach does not teach at the building. Outdoor sports are typically after school. Expect to be involved in a practice or game every day but Sunday. They get home by you picking them up or getting a ride from a teammate. There's no late bus. HW has decreased from when my oldest was playing sports (10 years ago) to now but expect maybe 1-2 hours of HW. They usually go to bed around 11-12. |
| Plan for 1-3 hours of homework depending on grade and classes. Practice times vary by school/sport or activity and even day. They walk, carpool, take activity buses if available, parent pickup. They sleep when they can and eat when they can. I’d say most go to sleep between 10pm-midnight. Time management is key. |
