TJ’s Mini (Almost) Everything Bagel Sandwich Crackers

Have 3 grams of added sugar in them for a total of 4 grams of sugar in 8 quarter sized crackers. I wanted to have a salty snack and these are overwhelmingly sweet. It literally lists glucose syrup in the ingredients. Why is food like this? Why is there sugar in so much, even in foods that shouldn’t have it? Yes, I suppose I should have picked it up and checked the ingredient list and nutrition information, but Everything Bagel flavored crackers? I expected to find added sugar in that about as much as I would in a jar of olives.

Because people are accustomed to and addicted to it. Just like salt. Eating prepared food from stores or restaurants now … overwhelmingly salty and sweet.

AND a surprising number of things "without" sugar have sucralose in them which is terrible and also fake sweet and gross. I'm going to learn to make my own everything crackers. Got a recipe anyone?

That sucralose trick bugs me, too. If you’re going to reduce the sugar but add more sweeteners, just say so on the front of the package. OP.

There are crackers that are meant to be a little sweet. Did you not look at the ingredients before buying them? Look at the labels before you buy things, OP. If you don't want sweet crackers, check the ingredients.

She already said she should have, snark face.

Thank you, pp. Yes, I said right in my short OP (seriously, you couldn’t read it or what?) that I should have checked the ingredients. Sweet-ish crackers are a thing for sure, but I don’t think of Everything Bagels as a sweet flavor or anything I want to have sweet, ever.

I'm assuming the crackers are more like Ritz crackers vs. Carr's table water crackers.

It's exhausting to try to eat healthy. I truly try and I read ingredients and have preferred brands of specific items, but if I ever want to try something different it's hard to scour through everything. I'm not a heath freak, I'm not skinny, I cook a lot from scratch, but it's really gross what's in every day foods.

No… they’re almost like a shortbread. Ritz are kind of layered/flakes and these are more like crumby. (They’re also in the compost bag) OP.

I rarely buy things that say “low sugar” prominently on the label, because they usually have sucralose in them.

+1

I am completely fine with dessert every day, but for that to be okay, we really try to avoid sugar in all the places it doesn’t need to be, like everything bagel crackers. And the fact that manufacturers mislead with “no sugar” labels doesn’t help.

My kids know to look for ingredients ending in “ose.” It shouldn’t be that hard.

100%
but I don't know the easy answer. I guess checking everything (snark face) and speaking with our wallets. But that seems like a losing battle against the masses that just buy this stuff mindlessly.

I guess watch for and support food startups (before they inevitably get acquired). People get to together to make a good quality product but then they eventually sell out to Dannon, Nestle, etc.
