What is it like working as a bus driver? What are your hours really like?
I am considering working as a bus driver, maybe next year but want to know what I would be getting into. |
|
most do a split shift, morning hours6-9 then middle of the day off then back in the afternoon 2-5 . Some do the same route every day, some cover runs when someone calls out so it is different all the time.
Imagine what the teachers go through and triple that because there is no supervision on buses. It pays pretty well if you have nothing else to do but the value of your entire day to get paid 6 hours deters a lot of people. They will train you and you 'll get your cdl with p endorsement, school bus endorsement and air brake endorsement. |
Is 6 when you are leave the bus depot? |
|
There are HS pickups AT 6am-ish. Try 5am for reporting to work at the depot.
I would love to have midday off. Get my errands done, doc appmt, etc. When I worked at a hospital, I had to report at 5am, so no big deal to me. My neighbor works at NIH and his start time is 5am. |

My middle schooler's bus, in addition to the ear-splitting decibel level, had a student yelling the N word several times at another kid during an argument, fights, throwing stuff, and once, allegations that a couple were having sex in the back seats. This was a Westland MS bus in Bethesda.
So if you want to deal with all that, you are a stronger person than I. |
