Thinking of signing up my 7 year-old for stroke and turn. He’s legal in all strokes except for butterfly, a stroke he has yet to learn.
Do they provide any instructions at all in teaching the strokes? Are kids expected to know all 4 strokes? Worried about the commitment since it’s from Oct to May. Not sure if one can withdraw from the class if it doesn’t work. Any thoughts? We are considering either KSAC or Olney. Any recommendations for site? Are they all the same? |
| Question I have is, why didn't your DC join a team? I am just curious. |
| Go to the one closest. We did it and it was fine. It’s basically preteam. Site depends on coach. |
| We had a few friends on our summer swim team that did NOT like the MSTC that was at MLK. Swim Montgomery at MLK on the other hand a lot of people liked and it goes in 8-9 week chunks so you don’t make the year commitment. |
Too pricey? He did the RMSC tryout last month and did not get in. |
My DC also tried out, but we are not too far from a few other clubs and tried out for those also. They made one of those, might go back to RMSC next year or the year after-- just because it is 10 min from the house rather than 20. |
| It’s been many years, but my kids both did this before joining teams and they absolutely do stroke instruction. Some of the coaches have historically been the same as the RMSC KSAC coaches, so if you learn well from them, it may help them know what you are capable of if you tryout for RMSC again in the spring (historically easier to make the team at Spring tryout). As others have mentioned, KSAC is supposedly going to be renovated next summer-so you’ll need to consider that if u do try out for RMSC in the Spring. |
OP here. If we are interested in tryout for summer of next year, should we only do stroke and turn at the location where we want to do the tryout? We are thinking of stroke and turn at KSAC, but do not want to do tryout out there if it means practice will be at South County pool. |

My kid has done club swim with PAC the last two years but doesn’t want to anymore. She doesn’t like the long meets because she doesn’t have any friends doing it, and the practices curtail her being able to do other things.
She wants to do stroke and turn at MLK to keel her skills up for summer swim. |
I’m not the original poster but I’m considering stroke and turn for my kid. They tried out for RMSC and didn’t make it. Olney swim center is the closest to our house and I don’t really know of other teams. (My kid is 8) Any advice? |
No one knows where KSAC RMSC swimmers will practice (although your reference to south county locations other than KSAC confuses me as I think it’s the southern most location). I think maybe you are right, I would do stroke and Turn at the location you’ll tryout at. By is try out in April (much lest competitive than July). |
| Pre-pandemic my kids did Joe Flaherty Dolphins beginning when they were 3, 7, & 9. A lot of flexibility with lessons/S&T/swim team, # of hours per week, and all three kids at the same time. Stayed with JFD for 4 years until the middle (11) wanted to join RMSC. 11 & 8 had no problem making the team that summer (13 not interested.) That worked well for us and several other families in our neighborhood. |
OP here. When KSAC closes for renovation, the South County pool in Silver Spring is supposed to cater to the KSAC swimmers: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/DGS-BDC/SS/721701.html |
