| We are driving to Toronto with kids and want to make an overnight stop. Can you recommend a safe quiet town on route and preferable 4-5 hours into it? |
| ^ Sorry, driving from DMV (Bethesda) |
| Scranton |
| Buffalo, NY |
| We always drive straight through to visit family, so no reco on place to stop. I do encourage you to go further on day 1 as sometimes the border can take longer than expected and Toronto traffic can be really, really bad. You could end up with your second day taking much longer than anticipated. |
| There aren’t many great options. We usually stop (and often sleep) in Altoona, PA if you’re taking the shortest route or Erie, PA if you’re going via Pittsburgh. There’s a nice waterfront hotel in Erie that has beautiful views. I can’t remember the name but I think it’s a Marriott property. |
| Corning, NY. Just over halfway from this end, probably more like exactly halfway when you count traffic crossing the border and around Toronto. Corning has a cute, walkable downtown, several hotels right there, and lots of restaurant choices. And the glass museum if you have time, but it's still a sweet place to stop even if you're just having dinner, going for a stroll, and spending the night. |
+1, great place for an overnight. |
Why chime in? Well over 5 hours from DC. |
So is Corning. |
Not if you leave at any time other than PM rush in DC. |
I stand corrected. Corning is 5 hours away. |

We have family in Buffalo. We stop in Clearfield PA (about 4 h from DC).
Corning is lovely but it is a longer drive (and on a different route). |
| Bradford, PA. Be sure to get tax-free gas on the Indian reservations. |
| I’ve stayed in Ellicotville NY a few times driving the trip to TO. It’s a small town with decent places to stay and eat on the fastest route, about 5.5 hours drive from here. |
