What happens when I try to return something purchased with a now-cancelled credit card?

I bought a living room sofa with my credit card, and it does not work in our space. It will need to be returned. In between buying the sofa, getting it delivered, and deciding don't want it, our credit card information was stolen by someone in San Francisco who likes gas stations and Apple stores. Obviously the card is cancelled, but what happens to my refund given the credit card no longer exists? Is there someone I need to contact?

Did you get a replacement card for the same account, or the entire cc account has been closed? If the former, then it should be fine. Not sure about the latter situation.

Confirming there have been times when I still had the account but a different credit card number and the refund found me (the automatic monthly payments for things like my cell phone found me too!)
