We're moving to the DC area and need to find the right school/school district for our autistic child with mild ID. He is in elementary school and is currently in a self-contained classroom with mostly individual, or two/three on one instruction. A regular classroom will be a disaster for him. He doesn't have "behaviors" but he will shut down and won't be able to access any of the curriculum. He is a few grade levels behind, academically.
So, where do we look? We don't have the resources for a specialized private school like Ivymount or KTS. |
| In Montgomery County the euphemism for self-contained classroom is "learning center." There is one in every cluster and you get bused where you need to go. Buy for commute. |
| Good to know that about MoCo! Thanks. |
| If you’re a gambling person, you can try to enroll in a DC charter that is more generous with 1:1s then try to get a private placement at KTS … |
What DC charters tend to have more 1:1s? I've been scouring the school profiles on dcpcsb.org but haven't found information that specific. |
I’m not sure if that data is collected. But anecdotally some are much more generous with 1:1s because they have more flexible budgets and because they don’t have self-contained options. So they keep the kid with a 1:1 as long as that works, then private placement. See if you can find the data on private/non-public placement by charter school (I found it once but not sure where). |
| MoCo has self contained classrooms specifically for autism. |
| Montgomery county has a range of self contained classrooms/programs. You can read a summary here: https://xminds.org/Guide-to-MCPS-Programs |
Thank you! |
|
FCPS has self contained classrooms for students with autism and mild ID. It's called EAC (Enhanced Autism Classroom). They are staffed with 1 teacher and 2 assistants with 6-8 students. Everything is done through an ABA lens and they have
ABA coaches that come out and support them. |
Thanks for this info! Are there any particular FCPS elementary schools we should focus on? |
EA isn't standard at all schools. An elementary school that has EA classroom will have students who come from nearby base schools to attend. Buses are provided. You can go to the school profiles on the FCPS page and see which schools offer the program. That will help you narrow down areas in FFX county. |
| I have observed self contained classrooms in DCPS. Do not go this route. |
In which schools? Regular, charter, both? |
Not the previous poster, but I'd stay far from self contained classrooms in DCPS. Some charter schools' might be ok. They are likely to have a range of disabilities, since only the largest charter schools have multiple self contained classrooms. |
