Is having someone there for you “mentally” subjective?

I’m trying to understand. It seems like you could have someone mentally there for you but that person may not know what to say or what you would want them to say, leaving you feeling like they aren’t actually there for you.

What does this mean to you? Being mentally there for someone?

A lot of times when I start telling DH about a problem he asks if I just want him to listen and commiserate or if I want suggestions. That's "being there" for me.
