Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
|
Are there any other sites to get information about MOCO public schools or is this the only place I should be looking?
Thank you. |
|
What kind of info are you looking for? I do like the "At a Glance" pages for each school on this official site, as well as the School Survey Results.
You can get some reviews on greatschools.net. |
| Oh, and of course it does without saying that asking about specific schools here is a good idea! |
That is the main site from where you can access other information such as BOE meetings, curriculum, educational resources, information about specific schools, etc. It's a very comprehensive site, although sometimes difficult to navigate through if you're not familiar with the system. Specifically what are you looking for? |
| OP here. I'm specifically looking for info on the smaller Elementary schools in the county. I know there are several that are under 350 total kids and one or two that only have an enrollement in the 200's. I want to take a look at a smaller public school and see what their differences are. |
Highland View Elementary in close in Silver Spring has fewer than 350 students, a diverse student body, and from what I hear, a good principal. This is not the same as Highland elementary which is also in Montgomery County. |
This link will help in examining enrollment: http://www.greatschools.org/maryland/rockville/Montgomery-County-Public-Schools/schools/?lc=e From there, you really need to look at Schools at a Glance on the MCPS website. |
| Not sure how realiable or updated site is, but I always go on schooldigger.com |
| schooldigger.com is great. OP, what specifically are you trying to compare? |
| I question the reliability and accuracy of both schooldigger and greatschools. They both list our local elementary as having a preK, which it does not have. Schooldigger does not appear to give any stars to either Rosemary Hills or Takoma elementary. Is that because their stars are based entirely on MSA scores, and primary schools don't do them? Maybe those sites work for folks who base their entire decisions on test scores. |
| if you are looking for smaller schools, low teacher/student ratios and small classes, check out private schools |
|
School Digger's info is quite old--from 2007-2008. OP, since you're looking specifically at school size, I'd be wary of their data. I know that our elementary school had 90 more kids in 2009-2010 than it had in 2007-2008! (That said, I'm less concerned with school size, strictly speaking, than with the overall school feel. Our school feels "small" and warm even though it is close to 600 kids.)

| OP here. I'm looking at public schools with small class sizes. My child is currently in a private school, but we are looking again at all of our options. |
| public schools in Montgomery County have at least 23 children in each class. they are also increasing class sizes next year, especially in the younger grades. There are less full-time teachers and programs are being cut all around. stay in private if you live in moco AND desire SMALL class sizes. |

Look up the rat infestation in Montgomery County elem. schools last year.
What private school? |
