Can you use a 529 to pay for on campus parking pass

Anonymous
DD is an RA and taking a car to campus for first time in her college career.

The parking pass is $500 for the year.

Can one use 529 funds to pay for this or is it out of pocket?

I wouldn’t risk it. We’ve been asked by the IRS to explain expense from 529 and fortunately kept rent documentation.

Google says no.

Really? You were audited for 529 expenses? I've used 529 money for 4 kids and haven't heard a peep.

Ask your college to roll all these ancillary fees into tuition or rent.

I'm sure the legislature will get right on that.

Not an audit but a letter asking for backup receipts!

You are renting a parking spot at the school. Rent is rent.

Odds of getting audited over this 1 in what? A million? And if you wrote a check to a college for an education related expense, you really think an IRS agent is going to challenge it?

You are renting a dorm room too. It counts.

Can you use 529 to rent a fridge for your dorm room?

Why is this not part of room and board?
