Dessert every day?

Anonymous
We got into the habit of a treat after dinner every day during Covid and haven’t stopped. Our kid is 7. It’s usually a cookie or ice cream. She eats pretty well, but post-Covid she has a lot more sugar during the day than she did when we were all eating at home each day (school lunches, b day parties, etc.).

Anyone else have a sugary dessert each night?

Read the ice cream pool thread. You are not alone. DCUM approves!

Provided they're eating healthily overall (fruits/veggies through the day), there's nothing wrong with a bit of dessert every day.

Don't listen to the crazies who impart their eating disorders and food hangups onto their kids. That's FAR more unhealthy, and likely to set their kids up for issues with food as they get older. Ask me how I know

Yes, mine do most days. Like PP, as long as they’re eating healthy meals, I don’t care. They get a ton of exercise, so it’s fine.

I eat dessert almost every day....I teach my kids it's about moderation and earning a dessert after dinner by eating healthy throughout the day.

Yes of course dessert every day, one Trader Joe’s mini ice cream cone is the perfect amount for a weeknight.

Yes, but wasn't my idea. I'm about to cut it off because they have way too much at relatives house. They go there every week for 2 days.
It's norm for them, not for me.

A small dessert (like one Girl Scout cookie) every day. Not dependent on behavior because food is not a reward. But also typically not ice cream unless we have company.

We have desert every day. I recently switched to fruit with whipped cream or fruit smoothie every other night. Still sweet, but more nutritious.

Not dessert, but sugary, salty and fatty snacks every day, due to my husband's bad habit of buying them for himself and letting the kids eat them as well. I have told him to stop, without luck so far. It's irritating, considering that both he and one of our children needs to control their weight.

We have "sweet dessert" 3 weeknights and on weekends, and "fruit dessert" the other nights. One kid doesn't bother on the fruit dessert nights; the other loves fruit. I just couldn't deal with watching them eat cookies, ice cream, or candy each night. It just seemed like a lot to me, even though I wouldn't judge someone else for doing it. So do what feels right to you!

No. We often have dessert, but more than half the time it's fruit, so just natural sugars.

pretty much every night - mini ice cream cone, or a piece of chocolate candy, or something homemade, or whatever. I had it as a kid too.

NOPE! Not everyday!

Agree. While throughout the day, my child likely has some sort of sweet treat every day through school, camp, or aftercare; deserts or sweets are a treat. Generally if asked for we will say yes, unless there have been multiple days in a row or we know for example, the next day is a birthday party with multiple treats. We don't forbid but also try and balance.
