Field Hockey tryouts

Anonymous
Hi,

My rising 9th grader is going to try for Field Hockey, do we buy the equipment before the try out or is there any place we can rent it? I have asked the school for information too, yet to receive them. They seem to be expensive and my child is trying for the first time, played regular Hockey in middle school during PE, and wants to try this.

Thanks.

Hoping someone will give you a field hockey specific response, but for two other sports my kids have participated in, our MCPS school could loan almost all of the equipment except shoes.
If you are not getting a response from the school, suggest contacting the athletic director (should be listed on the school website) or coach if you can figure out who it is.
Your school may have a sports boosters organization for parents, or possibly the PTA could put you in touch with a field hockey parent. Good luck!

What school? My child is trying out for field hockey at a DCC school in the fall. Also you can buy the cleats, stick, chin guards used. You need a new mouth guard.

My daughter started last year in 9th - borrowed equipment for the first day, bought her own that afternoon. It’s a sport a lot of girls start for the first time in high school.

Thank you for the responses, I will look in amazon

Lots of used equipment out there.

We borrowed a stick from a friend who plays club FH and used other things from soccer, lacrosse.

Dick's Sporting Goods has affordable options for field hockey equipment. Most schools will require you to bring your own equipment unless you have a friend or neighbor who can lend you some of it.

What school?

Does she have any friends who play field hockey and could loan her a stick to get through tryouts?

I think this depends on the school. Our school cuts for field hockey and I expect they do not loan out equipment (except MAYBE goalie gear?).

Lots of families that play have old sticks laying around, so agreed with the advice that if you know someone else who plays you may be able to borrow. Also agree a mouthguard really is a requirement. I don’t think our school would let girls tryout without one.

Definitely buy a mouth guard. You’ll want to mold it to your DD’s mouth before hand anyway. They are not that expensive.

Ask around and you an likely borrow a stick from someone.

Just reminiscing. Year DD tried out there were close to 80 girls. The coaches knew no one. DD described it as a sea of brunettes w/ponytails. DD decided to wash the same, bright colored jersey every night and wear it everyday to tryouts. In case that helped coaches remember her.

pp again. If instead they are given jerseys, from the coach that are numbered, try to get the same number everyday.

What do you mean every day? Aren't you supposed to hold on to your number?
