DS, unhooked, 4.27 W GPA ( goes to a rigorous private school outside of greater DC area), 1540, 36 superscore (35 single sitting); sure NMSF
Math research with awards at math fairs,
5 weeks paid engineering research internship at state university (selective),
4 weeks state governor's school in math,
3 varsity sports (captain in one but not recruitable in any sport),
all district, all state french-horn player,
some other school clubs
Senior year courses- AP Cal BC, AP Physics M & EM, AP Gov, Reg English, Honors Spanish

Applying for engineering

NC State (in state); UNC Chapel (in state), Virg Tech, Georgia Tech, Uni of Southern California, Purdue, Clemson

Rest of the colleges super high reaches (debating between duke ED or Princeton REA); leaning towards princeton

Does this look reasonable or should he add more safeties?

Very reasonable list.

It looks fine. Thanks for rubbing it in.

Every time anyone mentions their “very rigorous private school” I cringe. Everybody thinks their private school is “rigorous.”

So which ones are the safeties?
Anonymous
I should add demographics -southeast asian (Indian, male)

The reason I mentioned is because he does have 4B+s in last 3 years and several A-s. I know if he went to our public HS which is very competitive, he would have a much higher GPA. He went to public school from K-8 and all his friends at the public has much higher GPAs.

Sorry didnt include it to sound braggy.

So my kid prepared this list based on the scoir data.
Data from Scoir shows - 100% kids from his school with his stats got into NC state, Clemson, Virginia Tech so he is calling these as safety
95% chance at UNC chapel hill,
Purdue deferred a lot of kids with his stats and accepted lot more kids with lower stats so he thinks he will be deferred too.
I honestly dont think he has much chance at georgia tech but we have included since its close to home and great reputation for engineering. Looks like GT focuses way more on GPA (took kids with 4.6 or higher GPAs only from our school) and not much of test scores.

What is the UW GPA? I find the list odd for Engineering….USC? Duke? For engineering, I’d consider schools like CMU, Cornell, CalTech, Harvey Mudd, Lehigh, UCLA, University of Washington, Santa Clara

Does race matter anymore? Didn't we just have a Supreme Court ruling that race can't be considered in college admissions?

What type of engineering. University of Illinois is tops for civil engineering, UMD is tops for aerospace, etc.

Does UNC have engineering?

I am having hard time convincing myself to pay oos tuition at public universities when he can go to NC state and unc chapel (bioengineering) for much cheaper.

It has bioengineering. He will apply for that and mathematics as double major.

You should not cringe because the private schools will not all grade inflation. If anything they deflate. You can’t take tests over and over so this kid has great stats.

My main concern is his safety is...Clemson on there? My child did the same thing - better stats then yours and didn't get into any of their reaches. Targets only. University of Washington, UC Davis, UC San Diego are others to consider. If aerospace - CU in Boulder. Case Western.
