Yard care 101 for DC townhomes

Anonymous
Why majority of DC residents don't take care of their yards? Its not all that expensive to mow the lawn or trim the plants once a month. It makes such a huge difference in curb appeal for townhomes.

?? What neighborhood are you in? Almost everyone around my DC rowhouse takes care of their yards.

I don't!

Look, I've got two toddlers. So we're paying out the nose for childcare and stretched for our mortgage, so we do not have the budget to pay a professional.

We also are very short on free time. And the free time we do have to devote to household stuff ends up being much more child focused - moving them up to the next size clothes, culling old toys, researching childcare, keeping the house reasonably clean. Kids are only little like this for a few years, the front yard will be there forever.

The front yard is also just not really a priority for me. There's only so much I can care about in one calendar year and "trimming the plants" just does not make the list right now.

Hopefully in a few years, we'll have the money to pay someone to come once a month and make sure it looks decent. Until then, it is what it is.

This isn’t what 101 means.

Between two of you, taking out sometime once every other weekend isn't that difficult. Involve kids and husband, may be parents or in-laws or friends too and make your yard a nice and inviting place for your family.

Skip eating out, do a fast to detox, save meal money, buy a plant and do yard work as workout. Clean and trim.

Renters don’t do yard work, for one

I don't, because I hate doing yard work. I can pay a neighborhood kid $25 an hour to pull my weeds, and we both win. The kid makes money, I get to enjoy not doing yard work.
