Do most teens suffer from depression?

My 14yo gets into these funky moods. He is a straight A student, talented athlete, has a group of good friends, comes from a loving family, etc.

DH seems to think this is normal but I can’t help but worry about him.

Talk to him and his pediatrician. It may be helpful to see a therapist.

I think it’s increasingly common, but I don’t think it’s “normal” if that makes sense. Sure everyone has period of feeling down, but that sounds different than what you said “suffering from depression.” I would be especially concerned since you mentioned he does have good friends and plays a sport and is active. Definitely speak to a doctor.

What does funky mood mean in this context? Being surly and removed? Talking about self harm? There is an enormous range and not all mean depression.

OP here. He feels sad and sulks. It usually lasts a few hours and sometimes a day or two. During this time, he wants to be left alone.

A few hours or a day or two sounds fine. Don't you ever get into a mood?

If it's going on for weeks then it's a problem.

Just came across this Atlantic article the other day.

Probably can't get it all if you're not a subscriber, but there was a nice summary on their Instagram page. It's not about teens specifically, but the idea that anxiety and sadness are normal feelings (probably especially in teens!). Some people have poor coping mechanisms or can't get out of those feelings, and definitely need help, but many of us can just experience the emotion.

Did we forget what being a teen is like? This does not sound that concerning. Teens have big feelings - good and bad. Like big toddlers.
